ASP.Net AJAX Control ToolKit Extender for CardSpace

I've created a control based on the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit that gives a web site the ability to easily add cross browser support for CardSpace and othe Identity Selectors.

The concept comes is loosely based on dominick baier's CardSpace Control for ASP.NET, however I think that you'll find that it should be more flexible in regards to the UI abilities.

I have offered the control to the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit team and they are considering its inclusion in the project.

This prototype code is attached to this blog entry.

I'm going to Vegas! DotNetNuke OpenForce and DevConnections

DotNetNuke is having its first ever conference - DotNetNuke OpenForce '07 - and I'll be there!

I'm really looking forward to all the things on the DotNetNuke schedule, and because the event is coupled with the DevConnections event, I may even pop in there to see what's going on.

DotNetNuke Core Team members and Super-Duo Philip Beadle and Lorraine Young will be there leading the Australian contingent.

I just booked my conference ticket and hotel room. It'll be my first trip to the United States and I'm looking forward to it very much. It's a shame that I'll only be there for the conference and then I'll be coming straight back - but it will be worth it nonetheless.

Also I'd love to pay respect to my employer, Readify, the greatest company I've ever known. Readify place such importance in their staff. Even though I'll be paying for the trip myself, Readify are really helping out by letting my use a week out of my 23 fully paid Professional Development days.

I love Readify!

DotNetNuke CardSpace Authentication Provider in Beta

To all those that have asked me for an advance copy of the CardSpace Authentication Provider for DotNetNuke I thank you for your patience.

The provider is now a part of the standard DotNetNuke installation in DNN 4.6. Right now you'll need to sign up to the DotNetNuke Beta testing progam here: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/LinkClick.aspx?link=1123&tabid=510&mid=2027

Please send any feedback to me. The installation instructions haven't been published yet so unless you've got some CardSpace deployment experience you'll probably have an issue or two. Firstly, remember that you'll need SSL on your web site (shared SSL will be enough) before you can even contemplate using CardSpace on your site.

CardSpace in LiveID: Where's the STS?

As LiveId now supports information cards for authentication it seems that Microsoft are getting the whole machine behind the technology publicly.

You can now sign into Hotmail and various other sites using a self-issued card.

But the process seems kind of funny to me: the identity metasystem was designed for Identity Providers to run their own STS - and for site providers to act as relying parties.

However the current model for LiveId is topsy-turvy. LiveId acts as a RP and your computer acts as the STS.

This means that web sites that want to use CardSpace for authenticating LiveId based users need to have a system of HTTP redirects in place - this messes with the security of the identity metasystem and gives the user an inconsistent experience.

I hope that Microsoft soon expose a LiveId STS and then issue managed Information Cards to LiveId users. Then web sites will be able to act as Relying Parties, LiveId can act as the STS, and the user gets the true benefits of CardSpace - greater security and a better user experience.

Yes I know my CardSpace DotNetNuke module is broken!

I broke it a few days ago while preparing for the upcoming release of DotNetNuke 4.6.

I have written the DotNetNuke CardSpace Authentication Provider - which will be release to benefactors quite soon - and then to the wider public.

Until this release is complete I won't have the time to get the CardSpace module on this site running properly.

This will be my first official release of any open source software - so wish me luck! All feeback welcome...

Capturing a CardSpace session with Camtasia

With the recent new functionality in Microsoft's LiveId / CardSpace integration I thought it would be useful to give Microsoft some feedback about the CardSpace user experience when signing into LiveId services.

I opened up Camtasia and recorded a session associating an Information Card with my LiveId, and then signing into Hotmail.

Unfortuately it didn't work - CardSpace runs in a separate desktop - and Camtasia didn't capture the window.

I asked my mate at MS, Steven Woodward, what I should do - he gave me the easy (and obvious answer) - run the CardSpace demo in a VPC, and then use Camtasia to capture the whole session.

I hope someone finds this useful.

Blend 2 August Preview Problems

I recently installed Blend 2 August Preview in order to cut some Silverlight 1.1 CardSpace examples.

I started by using the W2K3 VS2008 Beta 2 TFS VPC image, then installed Blend2, the VS2008 Silverlight Alpha Tools.

Unfortunately the "Open in Expression Blend" context menu option in VS2008 failed, when Blend2 came up and said "The name Canvas does not exist in the namespace http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation".

There was also another symptom: When you open the "New Project" dialog in Blend2 the Silverlight (.Net) and Silverlight (.Net "Orcas") options were missing.

After a few hours thinking that I had the installation order incorrect, and talking to fellow Readifarian Damian Edwards, I found that there are two builds of the Blend 2 August Preview: 2.0.1075 and 2.0.1077. Damian is running the older one on Vista without problems.

I found this link: http://silverlight.net/forums/p/3628/10697.aspx which pointed me to the later build. This one works fine on the W2K3 image.

CruiseControl, Watin and NUnit

I got CruiseControl testing my Watin scripts today, after a couple of tricks:

Run NUnit with an app.config file for your test assembly, and specify that NUnit needs to run with a Single Threaded Apartment. See here: Thread.ApartmentState, running Watin with NUnit

Run CruiseControl as an application, not a service. I didn't try whether the "Allow service to interact with the desktop" worked, as the local system account wouldn't have been able to get to my VSS server.

Drop me a line if you have any other questions about it.

Some time back MS hinted that a new logo for Web Sites that accept Information Cards would be available.

Finally, it has been released. Mike Jones was first to annouce it, as far as i can tell: http://self-issued.info/?p=17.

I've got the logo built into the DotNetNuke CardSpace package.

I'm still talking with the DNN folk about integration, things are looking good on that front.

Quiet Times and DotNetNuke CardSpace Integration

Sorry to all that have been awaiting the latest release of the DotNetNuke CardSpace module. I've been offline for close to a month now as I have had a baby, and it turns out that she has got Cystic Fibrosis.

It has been a big shock to my wife and I, however we're getting through it and learning how to deal with it. It is heartbreaking to have to give a baby disgusting drugs and to perform pysiotherapy on her as she cries at the top of her lungs.

I've started working on the module again. I've also signed the paperwork to donate the module to the DotNetNuke Core, so in the coming months you'll see the module come in every installation of DotNetNuke.

DotNetNuke has recently appointed a new Team Leader for the Active Directory Authentication Provider project. CardSpace is coming on board soon. Also, there are conversations about OpenID and a more generic LDAP provider.

This increase in DotNetNuke's authentication abilities will improve DNN's user experience. As there are all these different methods, the DotNetNuke team are currently overhauling the interfaces between the DotNetNuke Core and the Authentication Providers. This work will take some time.

To all those that have requested a copy of the module, please be patient, I'll have something that you can use quite soon. This will be in the case that the DotNetNuke Team do not wish me to withhold it.

New Business Oppotunities from CardSpace

After listening to Garrett's (and friends) presentation at MIX07 on CardSpace, my eyes were opened to the new wave of business opportunities that the identity metasystem will give.

The presentation cited a new Canadian business that are using managed cards providing claims that captured in formation about people's body sizes.

Users can use these managed cards to sign in to sites selling clothes, and then they would can be directed to clothes that fit their body shape. Also, the users can use models to visualise what the clothes would look like when worn.

This is a very simple example of how claims based systems can create new businesses and enhance the offering of existing businesses to the consumer.

The Pamela Project is a group of people that are building plugins and additions for existing web site frameworks that add CardSpace support.

CardSpace and the Identity Metasystem Implementation Patterns

Microsoft have published a new document based on upcoming samples that show the standard requirements for implementing CardSpace and the Identity Metasystem in a web application.

This is the pattern that I have followed to create the CardSpace DotNetNuke Module.

Thanks to Mike Jones for announcing this: http://self-issued.info/wp-trackback.php?p=6

The Eighth Law of Identity

Since I was privileged enough to work with Steven Woodward in January I have thought about many of the things he taught me, but nothing as much as his Eighth Law of Identity - "There must be something in it for everyone".

I've been trying to work out why there isn't much momentum in the CardSpace world - when compared to the WPF's, the WCF's and WF's of .Net 3.0.

I wonder what is missing, and the only thing I can come up with is that the success of CardSpace, and in turn the Identity Metasystem, relies on sales of Vista.

However, I find this to be a bit of a "Chicken and Egg" problem - why would people move to Vista (or install the .Net Framework 3.0 on XP) if web sites are not implementing CardSpace? Why would web sites invest in enhancing their systems when the potential user base is so small?

I think that out of the .Net 3.0 technologies, CardSpace will have the most important impact on the Internet landscape.

I guess it is just a matter of time - one day everyone will have a bunch of Information Cards that move around with them, giving them secured access to all the information they like.

Richard Turner surely knows his stuff.

It also solved the problems I had when I setup www.webhost4life.com to read CardSpace tokens.

It also provided me a nice entry into PowerShell - I don't see any reason to use Start -> Run > Cmd again.

CardSpace and Framesets

I have created a WPF/E CardSpace sample based on Vittorio's outline.

I runs well at https://www.dbartholomew.net/wpfe_example/default.html.

To make my site look a little better I created the WPF/E tab that you can see on the left, and added an IFrame module to the page.

However, the sample doesn't work in the IFrame - even though the page is loaded using SSL.

This has lead me to the conclusion that the entire page must use SSL, not just the page containing CardSpace based code.

I have a temporary problem forcing the WPF/E page to use SSL, this should be fixed within a day or so.

Live Labs STS Integration with DotNetNuke

I thought that my Live Labs Managed Card was missing claims, which was preventing the CardSpace UI from sending the card to the site.

Turns out that I was using the wrong token type - so far my self issued cards have been using SAML 1.0 tokens, whereas the Live Labs STS required SAML 1.1 tokens.

I've updated my system to allow the TokenType to be configurable, so now you can choose the token type for each DNN portal.

Managed Cards are still not ready, I'm waiting on an update of the TokenProcessor from Microsoft that will allow the Live Labs STS cards to be used.

Live Labs STS - Managed Card Missing Claims

I've create a child portal in this DotNetNuke installation to test the use of CardSpace with Managed Cards.

At this stage the implementation of the DNN portal has gone well. The portal specifies that it requires a managed card that has been issued by the Microsoft Live Labs STS.

Unfortunately, the cards that are created by the Live Labs STS user interface do not seem to be complete. The sample website that you can download from the Live Labs STS shows that the PPID and the nickname are required claims. The two cards that I've generated from the site do not contain these claims, therefore I cannot send them to the child portal.

I've got an email off to the team at the Live Labs STS site, and I hope they can point out exactly what's gone wrong here. So, stay tuned..

CardSpace: Keyset does not exist

I've successfully overcome the "Keyset does not exist" error that I was getting from CardSpace.

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=887903&SiteID=1

Garrett Serack's command line functions at the bottom of the post are the key to the solution.

DotNetNuke CardSpace Modules Delayed

I've been waiting on WebHost4Life, my Internet Host, to update the web server to handle CardSpace.

Initially, I purchased their $40USD SSL certificate. This took a couple of days to handle.

Then, after my CardSpace code executed, I realised that the server I'm using didn't have .Net 3.0 libraries installed. This took another day to install.

Then I got the error "Keyset does not exist", it looks like this is because I missed some steps in the SSL certificate installation. More information is given here.

Also, during this process, I upgraded my DNN installation to include ssl_Module from www.snowcovered.com. This will allow me to ensure that the login and registration pages use SSL, a prerequisite for CardSpace.

DotNetNuke CardSpace Modules Beta

I've finished a first cut of CardSpace modules for DotNetNuke. Over the next couple of days they will be installed on this site for public demonstration and testing.

At the moment these modules do not allow users to create an account in DNN with an Information Card.

If you use the standard DNN process for creating your user account you can login to this site and link your Information Card to your DNN account.

After that, when you return to the site, you can provide your Information Card to sign in, or use standard DNN login mechanisms.

DotNetNuke and CardSpace - Medium Trust Fails

On my journey of implementing CardSpace into DotNetNuke I came across this exception: "That assembly does not allow partially trusted callers."

It seems that System.IdentityModel or System.ServiceModel doesn't like that DotNetNuke is set to run under medium trust by default.

I've set DotNetNuke to high trust for my development, we'll see how this pans out.

CardSpace for DotNetNuke

I've kicked off my personal project. As there seems to be very little CardSpace experience around the world at the moment and DotNetNuke is my favourite CMS, I've decided to integrate the two together. When I get this going I plan for it to be integrated into the DotNetNuke core. This should kick off a proliferation of CardSpace enabled sites around the world.

At the moment, I'm extending the DotNetNuke WebControls library to create a generic CardSpace control for DNN. This will then be contained with a DNN module for use on any page.

At the moment I'm going to get it working for self issued cards. Managed cards will come in the future, I'll probably start by doing an integration with the Microsoft Live Secure Token Service (Microsoft Live STS).

If you'd like to be involved please leave a comment.

CardSpace vs. the Australia Card

Windows CardSpace is becoming real. I've spent the last few days working with Steven Woodward from Microsoft HQ. It has been a real pleasure to be exposed to an expert in this field, I must say. We've covered a lot of the more functional parts of CardSpace, and I must say I'm quite excited about the whole technology.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Before working in CardSpace I had visions of the Australia Card that I thought were solid, however now my opinion has changed. I used to think that identity would be based strongly in biometrics from my experience with Cognitec's FaceVACS product range, smartcards (in particular ISO24727) and fingerprints.

Beginning to understand CardSpace leads me to a conclusion that although Microsoft's Kim Cameron and his associates seem to have solved problems of identity in the digital realm, these discoveries will reach much further than just the Internet.

As an example, if the police conducted a random breath test and required your driver's licence, a portable handheld device could verify your identity with a driver's licence bureau. To extend this concept, foreigners in Australia may only be permitted to drive in Australia if their originating driver’s licence bureau offered an STS endorsed by the local authorities.

Previously, I considered smartcard interoperability to be the technology that would solve the complexities in delivering an identity card to a population. While I still believe that this technology will play a large part in the proliferation of smartcards, I do not think that it will solve the problems that would cause friction in the deployment of the Australia Card.

In the ISO 24727/biometrics world, the seven laws of identity were not considered. In my opinion, and I don’t consider myself a hardcore civil libertarian, privacy would have been compromised significantly.

I’m constantly confused by the release of smartcard based passports for Australian citizens. Without a standard such as ISO 24727 for interoperability these passports are completely unusable outside of Australia. ISO 24727 is not the only requirement to make an electronic passport usable – there also needs to be a standard for housing passport data that would be stored on an ISO 24727 card. ISO are working on these standards, but I wonder if they are truly necessary.

A claims based system, coupled with contactless smartcards (like those used in the current Australian passports) and ISO 24727, where every country operated a trusted STS, could make some major improvements into border management.

I’ve been thinking about these problems for several years now. Don’t think this will be my last blog entry about it. I know that this posting may be a little heavy on terminology, so please feel free to comment or contact me.

IE Web Developer Toolbar Beta 3 available

This is a couple of days off the pace, but you can download Microsoft's latest Internet Explorer Web Developer Toolbar (Beta 3) to assist with fiddly and tiresome HTML and CSS nitpicking.

Anyone with a serious amount of experience in HTML and CSS will have known, used and relied upon FireFox's Web Developer toolbar, one of the most valuable tools in web development.

I just downloaded and installed this on Vista. The toolbar doesn't display immediately, on Vista there's a problem that is resolved by logging on and logging off.

DotNetNuke Repository Module Rendering Problems

I developed a skin for the DotNetNuke Repository module (v. 03.01.10), and struggled to get the skin to render properly. The problem was caused in the module settings - the cache timeout had been set in order to improve the performance. In order to get the module to render properly the Cache Time in Module Settings -> Page Settings had to be set to zero.

When you are logged in as admin or host the modules are not being cached, and you see the expected output. As soon as you open the page anonymously or with a regular user the output doesn't render properly. In my case this rendering had two effects: the [RATINGS] tag was outputting an extra

and throwing out my whole DNN skin. Also, the resources stored in the Resx files are not read, so all the field labels came out blank.

Initially I tried reinstalling the module with no effect. I then threw a second repository module on the page and found that it worked fine. After comparing the two modules I found that the broken one had its cache timeout set to 1200 seconds.

I guess the moral to the story is "never set a Cache Timeout value on the module settings for the DotNetNuke repository module".

Telstra Bigpond Cable Traffic Shaping

After a week of massive downloads I found that my Telstra Bigpond Cable connection had become shaped. I still had about five gigabytes to download when I my connection was shaped down to 56.6K.

I called the Telstra Bigpond account department and they told me that they are allowed to release the shaping one time during the contract period. It took about ten minutes for the shaping to be released and my traffic returned to normal. The release works until the end of the month.

If you're a Bigpond cable user and you get shaped early in the month then consider calling the accounts department and getting the restriction removed.

Readification

Today I started my new job at Readify.

It was strange going to work in my living room:

I woke up at 6:00am all excited

put on my new Readify t-shirt

booted my computer

wondered what next

I quickly found that I can easily get jobs from TFS.

I then started to work on Readify's ThreeByThree projects. I'm writing a simple demonstration of WPF data binding converter functionality. My example is going to convert temperature samples between kelvin, celsius and fahrenheit depending on what is written in the XAML.

I also introduced myself to Philip Beadle, Readify's resident DotNetNuke expert. I'm planning to join him on the DotNetNuke Help Project so that I can lend a hand.
